Lindy:
- J.R.R.Tolkein
"Lord of the Rings," and anything else he wrote, like "Farmer
Giles of Ham," "Leaf by Niggle," his short stories, and
"The Hobbit," and all his oxford lectures. In short, one of
my three favorite authors.
- John Gardner
Though he first published the "Sunlight Dialogues" about a
modern detective, his real talent lay in more classical vein with "Jason
and Medea," and "The Wreckage of Agathon," and all his
short stories as well. Again, one of my three favorite authors.
- "The French
Lieutenant's Woman" by John Folwes
Book and movie too, for that matter, though they are quite different.
This is Fowles explanation of how to write a Victorian Novel, which
is fascinating for a writer, for it is about the craft itself. Also,
the "Magus I and II," especially II after he realized he owed
Dickens on "Great Expectations". And anything else he wrote,
as my third favorite author.
- "Our Mutual
Friend"
by Charles Dickens
Wonderful book, only one of his that really has a three dimensional
woman, and at the end ties up every thread with a neat, very neat bow!
It was his last complete book, and shows him at the top of his powers.
- The Merlin
series by Mary Stewart
