Catharine:

  • "Frederic" by Leo Leonni
An award-winning book about a mouse who doesn't fit in, and the merits of the poet/dreamer/artist personality.
  • "Holes" by Louis Sachar
1998 Newbery medal winner. It has a great plot & weaves together suspense, tall-tales and magical realism.
  • "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame
Okay, so I like stories that involve anthropomorphized animals, but I think the characters are so memorable!
  • "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin
  • "Madame Bovary" by Gustave Flaubert
  • "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy O'Toole
    Hilarious!
  • "A Prayer for Owen Meaney" by John Irving
    Funny and poignant
  • "Cold Mountain" by Charles Frazier
Interesting post civil war era love/survival story.
